June is National Safety Month, so we’re going to step off the beaten path of financial education. This is a scary thought, but think about what your absolute worst nightmare would be. Chances are it’s losing a loved one unexpectedly. We’ve seen firsthand how unpreparedness can turn an emergency into a catastrophe that could have potentially been avoided. Medical crises, accidents, natural disasters, or home fires are unpredictable and can strike anyone anytime. However, with planning and preparation, you can be ready (as much as you can) if these emergencies ever happen and protect your loved ones. This month is the prime opportunity to be aware, plan, and put things into action, so here’s how you can proactively prepare for such events. Practice Exit Strategies: Ensure everyone in your household is familiar with multiple escape routes in case of a fire or other emergency. Regular drills are essential to keep these routes clear in your mind and to ensure everyone knows what to do. This is especially crucial for families with children or elderly members who may need extra assistance. Have fire blankets, window ladders, pet escape plans, and extinguishers at the ready. And PRACTICE! Prepare Safety Kits: Keep well-stocked emergency kits in your home and vehicles. These kits should include first aid supplies, non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, and basic tools. Add items like blankets, flares, a multi-tool, and a portable phone charger for your car. Update these kits regularly to ensure the items are current and functional. Install Life-Saving Devices: Equip your home with essential safety devices like smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and fire extinguishers. Regularly check these devices to ensure they’re functioning correctly. Additionally, consider installing an automated external defibrillator (AED) and familiarize yourself with its use. Purchase tools to aid someone choking. Learn Life-Saving Skills: Invest time in learning critical skills like CPR, basic first aid, and how to use a fire extinguisher. These skills can be invaluable during a crisis and might make the difference between life and death. Participate in regular refresher courses to keep your skills sharp and up to date. Practice Regularly: Consistent practice and refreshers on your emergency plans and life-saving skills ensure everyone in your household is well-prepared and confident in their ability to respond effectively during a crisis. Taking these proactive steps can reduce the likelihood of a personal disaster becoming your worst nightmare. If you need suggestions on how to go about any of the above, reach out!
