Estate Planning in New Jersey: Protect What You've Built and the People You Love

Protecting your family is the most important part of your financial plan.

Estate planning isn't about the end of life. It's about the people, the values, and the wealth you've spent a lifetime building — and making sure all of it lands exactly where you intend.

At Family Wealth Management in Marlton, NJ, estate planning is a core part of the WealthCare Process — not a separate conversation we refer out. Marty Higgins, CFP®, AEP® is one of fewer than 2,000 advisors in the country holding the Accredited Estate Planner designation — and served as past President of the Estate & Financial Planning Council of Southern New Jersey. Through our partnership with Wealth.com, we handle the preparation, analysis, and drafting of your estate documents — with licensed attorneys on the Wealth.com platform who finalize your wills and trusts.

Client Centered

Many wealth firms talk about estate planning. Few weave it into every other decision they make for you. We do — because how you transfer wealth is just as important as how you grow it.

We are proud to be powered by Wealth.com — the #1 rated estate planning platform in wealth management — which allows us to analyze your existing documents, create a plain-language visual map of your estate plan, and identify gaps before they become costly problems for your family. Estate planning and your financial plan, finally in one place.

"We help families understand what they have, what it means, and what to do next."

Planning Note
What New Jersey families need to know right now.

The federal estate tax exemption is now $15 million per individual — made permanent under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (2025). For most South Jersey families, federal estate tax is no longer a primary concern.

What is still very much in play: the New Jersey inheritance tax. NJ taxes assets passing to certain beneficiaries — siblings, nieces and nephews, close friends, and unmarried partners — at rates of 11% to 16%, regardless of estate size. This is one of the most commonly missed planning issues we find in estate document reviews, and one that proper planning can meaningfully reduce.

Discovery

We listen first — your family, your values, your concerns. Nothing about your plan should feel templated.

Design

We map a structure that reflects how you want your wealth to work for the people you love.

Document

We do the preparation, analysis, and drafting through the Wealth.com platform — then licensed attorneys finalize your wills and trusts. You also get a plain-language visual map of your estate that your family can actually understand, not just the attorneys. For complex situations involving blended families, special needs, or business interests, we coordinate with a specialized estate attorney.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions families ask us.

  • Yes. An estate plan isn't just about taxes — it determines who raises your children, who makes medical decisions for you, and how your assets are handled. Almost every adult benefits from one.

  • No. Family Wealth Management is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Through our partnership with Wealth.com, licensed attorneys on the platform finalize your wills and trusts. For straightforward estate plans, most clients won't need a separate attorney at all. For more complex situations — blended families, special needs planning, business interests, or significant NJ inheritance tax exposure — we coordinate with specialized estate attorneys and can connect you with the right professional.

  • Through our partnership with Wealth.com, licensed attorneys on the platform review and finalize your wills and trusts — so most families don't need to hire a separate estate attorney. We handle the preparation, analysis, and document drafting on your behalf through the platform. If your situation involves a blended family, special needs planning, a business interest, or significant NJ inheritance tax exposure, we will recommend working with a specialized estate attorney and can help you find the right one in South Jersey.

  • We recommend a full review every three to five years — and immediately after major life events like marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, a death in the family, a business sale, or a move to a new state.

  • Estate planning coordination is included in our ongoing advisory relationship. Any legal drafting is billed separately by the attorney you choose.

  • New Jersey repealed its state estate tax in 2018. However, NJ does have a separate inheritance tax that applies to assets passing to certain beneficiaries — including siblings, nieces and nephews, and close friends — at rates from 11% to 16%. This is separate from the federal estate tax and catches many families off guard. Our team reviews NJ inheritance tax exposure as part of every estate planning consultation.

  • Family Wealth Management has partnered with Wealth.com, the #1 rated estate planning platform in wealth management. Through this partnership we can analyze your existing estate documents, create a visual plain-language map of your estate plan, and identify gaps — all integrated with your WealthCare financial plan.
